Beginning Fly-Tying

In this workshop we are going to describe how to tie four types of flies (Dry, wets, streamers, and nymphs), which you will be able to use during the fishing season. Each of the patterns has been specifically selected so that you can tie other patterns in the category with little difficulty. In learning these basic techniques you will soon master certain fundamentals, which will help as you start tying more complex patterns. All materials and equipment for these workshops will be provided. I am proud to have Jeremy Maxon’s experience, and tying skills, as our instructor for this workshop.

Jeremy, has been tying flies, researching materials, and developing techniques for his own patterns since he attended a fly tying class in High School. Jeremy ties flies commercially for many of the fly shops in the Treasure Valley, as well as abroad. Jeremy has been invited by the Fly Fishers Federation (FFF)  Fly Tying Expositions as well as other shows in the Northwest, where he shows attendees how to tie various patterns.

He was chairman for the 2009 Western Idaho Fly Fishers Expo in Boise, Idaho where he and his family live. (See workshop for info). All materials and equipment for these workshops will be provided. Limited to 8 Participants.   For workshop dates and times, please refer to registration or upcoming events.

Workshop fees are $65.00 Limited to 10 Participants and will be held in the Sawtooth Conference Room at Cabela’s Tuesday evenings starting at 6:00pm.

Jeremy’s knowledge and experience on the water, and at the tying bench makes him one of the best instructors I know. Your fly box will never be the same after attending this workshop.

We will have many materials available for the workshop but because this is an open question and answer format you might need to bring your own special material needed for your fly. (See workshop for more info). We will provide as much materials and equipment as possible. Workshop Fees $125.00 Limited to 10 Participants.  Workshop Dates are Thursday evenings 6:00 to 8:00pm.

Beginning Fly Fishing Classes

This course is designed for beginning fly fishers, with little or no experience.  You will learn how to select your first fly rod and reel, and how to select a fly line that meets your fishing needs. We will discuss leaders, tippets, and show you the knots used to attach them. We will introduce you to the types, and categories of flies used, and how to fish them. We will then discuss stream anatomy and show you how to locate fish in various types of holding water. Then we will put it altogether with personal casting instruction, and basic line management, and presentation techniques.

The first cast we will learn is the “roll cast”. Once you have developed these basic techniques I would encourage you to take our Intermediate Fly-Fishing and Casting Workshop. This workshop takes you beyond the basic “roll cast”, and introduces you to new mending and line management techniques designed to help you master and enjoy the Art of Fly-Fishing & Casting.

Intermediate Fly Fishing

Welcome to the Intermediate Fly-Fishing Workshop. In this workshop, you will need to know the basic fundamentals of fly-fishing, and casting. I remember my second and third years of fishing and how frustrating it was to see fish rising and not being able to catch them. Or fishing nymphs and not catching a thing while the guy down stream had hook up after hook up.

This workshop will fine tune your casting technique allowing you to change the direction of your cast while fishing to close and distant fish. We’ll show you how to rig, and fish two flies. And how to effectively fish dry flies, nymphs, and streamers using line management, and mending techniques. This is a water course so you will need your waders, boots, fly rod, and vest.

Workshops cost $75.00 and are limited to 4 participants. Workshops are held Sunday’s 2:00pm to 6:00pm. See registration for dates, and locations.
